Crown Sydney Secures Temporary Liquor Permits as Regulatory Scrutiny Continues

The prominent Australian entertainment corporation, Crown Resorts, recently declared that the New South Wales Independent Liquor & Gaming Authority (ILGA) has issued three provisional alcohol service permits for its Barangaroo property. These permits act as a temporary solution, enabling Crown Sydney to maintain alcoholic beverage service in its non-gaming zones – encompassing its bar sections and a pair of street-level dining establishments – past the expiration of its current liquor licenses. The permits are effective from the first of May 2021 until the thirty-first of October 2021.

Crown’s Executive Chair, Helen Coonan, remarked, “Crown is participating in a productive dialogue with ILGA to rebuild their trust in our business practices and to strive towards the removal of the limitations placed on our gaming license in Sydney. We appreciate ILGA’s endorsement of these new liquor licenses for Crown Sydney Property Pty Ltd, which will permit patrons to continue to experience Crown Sydney’s non-gaming amenities as we navigate this process.”

ILGA Chair Philip Crawford affirmed that the Authority had consented to collaborate with Crown Resorts late in the previous year to facilitate the opening of its lodging, dining, bar, and entertainment spaces. Nevertheless, he stressed that the regulatory body was still evaluating Crown’s reactions to the concerns highlighted in the Bergin Report. “Crown must implement substantial changes for the Authority to be convinced that it is on a course towards becoming appropriate to possess a gaming license,” Crawford concluded.

As Crown Resorts rejoiced in a renewed license for its Sydney gaming establishment, its Perth counterpart encountered a hurdle. A sudden, short-term lockdown in the Perth and Peel areas prompted Crown Perth to declare a brief closure from April 27th to May 1st. This shutdown impacted gaming activities, dining establishments, and amusement options, encompassing the theater, event halls, and conference rooms. Despite this, the lodging accommodations stayed available, albeit with limitations on occupancy.
