Massachusetts Casinos Fined for Breaking Collegiate Betting Rules

Three land-based gambling establishments in Massachusetts have been penalized for breaking the state’s regulations on wagering on collegiate athletics.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) discovered infractions at MGM Springfield, Plainridge Park Casino, and Encore Boston Harbor.

Encore Boston Harbor was hit with a $10,000 penalty, while Plainridge Park Casino and MGM Springfield were each fined $20,000.

Each gambling venue was penalized for permitting patrons to place bets on regular season contests involving University of Massachusetts squads. State law forbids wagering on events featuring UMass unless the event is a tournament with at least four teams.

These rules have been in place since the state launched its regulated sports betting market in January. In-person betting commenced first, followed by online betting in March.
